Oh! I Do Love To Be Beside The Seaside
We are big beach-goers. While others despise the sand, we never give it a second thought. It comes with the territory. If the price to be paid for discovering starfish in rock pools, building sandcastle cities and learning ways to dodge a shore break is some sand in your swimmers then that’s fine by us.
Packing for the beach is a little ritual we have mastered in our house. Dean bags the towels, swimmers, buckets and spades and umbrella. I am designated sunscreen and hat application and organizing of refreshments. We usually get to the beach by 9am to avoid the crowds and the blaring midday sun, so a few morning tea options allows for a little break to fuel up before another adventure in the sand or waves.
I’ve always got a few of bottles of water in the freezer which act as ice bricks to keep other things cool and of course are a refreshing drink if things are getting a little hot. If I’m really organised I pop some orange wedges or grapes in the freezer the night before and take those along for an icy treat. If we’ve managed a sleep-in and get to the beach a little later than usual I might pack some left-over meatballs or pancakes (that I sometimes freeze when I on-purpose make too many), to fend off lunchtime hunger.
Generally I keep things pretty simple and take a couple of options, such as:
+ pretzels
+ tamari almonds
+ fresh fruit, such as grapes, apples, plums, bananas or mandarins
+ little packets of chips or popcorn
+ biscuits
A couple of other things to remember are hand wipes and a plastic bag for rubbish. Of course, there’s always hand-cut hot chips and lemonade from the kiosk when we are feeling lazy.

Hi,
just saw your link on Swissmiss and could not believe my eyes when I saw these beautiful photos of Merewether beach, which made my day.
Love your blog, I will be a regular visitor from grey rainy London!

A Novocastrian in London, hey? Thanks for dropping by – hope I haven’t made you too homesick. Not sure where the link is on SwissMiss, but I’ll take it.
